Becoming a member of William A. Garvey VFW Post 8203 means standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow veterans who understand your service and your sacrifice. Our Post is a welcoming, family-friendly place where you can connect, relax, and continue serving our community together.

Whether you are recently separated, long retired, or somewhere in between, we invite you to learn more about eligibility, how to join, and the many ways you can be part of the VFW family here in North Port.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a congressionally chartered organization for veterans who have served in a qualifying overseas area during a period of conflict. In general, you may be eligible for VFW membership if:

  • You are a U.S. citizen who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces, and
  • You received a campaign or expeditionary medal, hostile fire or imminent danger pay, or served in a qualifying combat/hostile area as defined by the VFW National Bylaws.

Common examples include service in places such as Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan, service in Korea and other designated operations around the world.

Eligibility can be confusing, and every era of service is different. If you are not sure whether you qualify, bring your DD-214 or separation paperwork to the Post or contact us—we will gladly review it with you and help confirm your eligibility privately and respectfully.
Joining William A. Garvey VFW Post 8203 is a straightforward, friendly process. Here is how to get started:

  1. Visit the Post. Stop by VFW Post 8203 during open hours or before a meeting. Let a member or officer know you are interested in joining.
  2. Call or email ahead if you prefer. You can reach us at (941) 426-6865 or by email at info@vfwpost8203.com to ask questions or set up a time to talk.
  3. Bring your service documents. Please bring a copy of your DD-214 or other official documentation showing your overseas service and campaign medals or qualifying deployment.
  4. Complete a membership application. We will help you fill out the VFW membership form and submit it for approval.
  5. Pay your dues. Annual dues are discussed with you at the Post and help support our programs, building, and community work.
  6. Get welcomed in. Once your membership is approved, you will be formally welcomed into the Post and invited to participate in meetings, events, and volunteer opportunities.

If you need help tracking down your paperwork or have questions about any step, just let us know—we are here to help.

  • Volunteer at fundraisers and community activities.
  • Support our programs through donations or sponsorships.
  • Encourage and accompany the veteran in your life as they get involved.

If you would like to learn more about options for family members and supporters, please reach out—we are happy to talk with you.
How much are dues?
Dues amounts are set by the VFW and our Post and may change over time. When you contact or visit us, we will share the current annual dues and any life membership options that may be available.

Do I have to attend every meeting?
No. We encourage members to attend meetings when they can so they can stay informed and have a voice, but we understand that work, health, and family come first. You can be as involved as your schedule allows.

Do I need a uniform?
No full uniform is required. Many members choose to wear a VFW cap, shirt, or other items at meetings and events, but it is not mandatory for general membership. Formal ceremonies may include specific guidance, which we will explain in advance.

What if I am not sure I qualify?
Please do not let that stop you from reaching out. Bring your DD-214 or other service records to the Post or contact us by phone or email. We will review your service with you and help determine eligibility confidentially.

Can I just stop by to look around?
Yes. You are welcome to visit, meet members, ask questions, and get a feel for our Post before you decide to join.
